The patience of those heading north to south in Switzerland was tested on Saturday. There were major congestions on motorways, namely between Basle and Lucerne, at the Chiasso border crossing to Italy and also at the Gotthard Road Tunnel, where a ten miles long queue of vehicles formed. On Saturday afternoon, the situation improved little by little.
The reason why so many vehicles took to the roads is that school holidays started in Zürich and Aargau, two densely populated cantons of Switzerland, as well as in North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populous federal state of Germany. Those travelling northwards were also affected. There was a traffic jam at the south end of the Gotthard Road Tunnels, causing delays of up to two hours. On Sunday, traffic ran more smoothly than on Saturday. However, there were jams on both ends of the Gotthard Tunnel. Austria and France were even worse hit than Switzerland. In the Rhône valley, there was a 57 mi long queue on Saturday morning. Austria reported a major traffic jam at the Tauern Road Tunnel in the federal state of Salzburg. At temperatures well over 85 F, people had to wait in their vehicles for four to five hours.
