Written by MH
Saturday, 30 July 2011 08:49

The workshop on transport and transport infrastructure was hosted by the Ministry of Transport in Ljubljana on 8 July 2011.

During the workshop it turned out that progress towards sustainable mobility requires the establishment of an integrated planning and management of transport systems and at the same time the adoption of a coherent overall strategy for transport, on which to base an operational program to support research and cooperation within EU. Concrete measures would, inter alia, include the introduction of a modern public transport in eco vehicles; promote the use of less energy-consuming vehicles, the introduction of energy-efficient vehicles (electric, hybrid), the construction of infrastructure and the transition to renewable energy and overall energy efficiency in transport.

The Interstate Commission for Karavanke tunnel met on 8 June 2011 in Klagenfurt. On the agenda were the short and long-term solutions related to the upcoming summer tourist season and the future upgrade of this important link between Slovenia and Austria.

The Commission took note of the short-term measures necessary for safe operation of the tunnel during the summer, adopted by the Operating Committee composed of representatives of DARS and ASFINAG. The short-term measures are related to the tourist peaks, when the traffic density increases the risk of accidents.

Regarding the adoption of the long-term solution, the Slovenian side presented a study of best variants. The Austrian side will revise the study in detail by the next meeting, scheduled for 2 September 2011 in Slovenia. In the meantime the long-term solution about upgrading remains open. Slovenia prefers a variant of the second tube.

Both sides committed to verify until the next meeting in Slovenia the possibility of co-financing the project from the European funds.
