More traffic through the Swiss Alps - Modal Shift Target still far from being reached

Transalpine freight traffich as grown in the first half of 2011with rail freight traffic having more increased than truck traffic. In the meantime, the transport of goods over the Alps has reached the levels they had before the financial crisis again.


Thanks to the stronger increase the market share of rail transport as compared to road transport (modal shift) grewto from 62,6 % to 64,1 %. Unaccompanied combined transport (UCT) had the highest growth rate, with an increase of 13.9 percent to 8.296 million tons.

With these numbers the modal shift target of not more than 650,000 trucktrips per year is far from being met. After the first half of the year, already a number of 647,000 truck journey was reached. Not even the intermediate target limit of 1 billion trucks in 2011, which was fixed in a Swiss law on modal shift, will be achieved this year.

Slowdown in growth of railfreight traffic

The economic slowdown in the second quarter of this yearalso had its effects on rail freight transport. From April to June 2011 the amount of goods transported on rail only grew by 5.8 percent as the Federal Statistical Office announced last Tuesday. During the economic boom at the beginning of 2011, the growth rate compared to last year was about 10.6 percent. Overall, 188 million tons of goods were transported on rail in the first half of 2011. With the increase of 8.1 percent , the growth rate was almost as high as before the crisis in the first half of 2008. This growth rate especially showed in domestic traffic. The volume of transported goods in the first half of the year increased by 9.4 percent to 127.8 million tons and was considerably higher than before the crises (118.4 mllion tons). The growth rate in international traffic on the contrary was clearly lower than in the first year of 2008.

Gigaliner on trial run

Innsbruck - The 25 meter long trucks will circulate on German motorways soon. On the Austrian side of the border, people in Tyrol do not appreciate this novelty. The Austria/Tyrol Transit Forum calls it an „attack on rail transport“.

 

The so-called gigaliners can weigh up to 60 tons and be more than 25 meters long. The extra-long trucks have generated lively debatenot only amongst drivers and those fighting transit traffic in Europe. Bavaria will now be one of the seven German Bundesländer where the gigaliners will be on the road for at least five years now. The Bavarian government has approved a five-year trial run along with six other German Bundesländer.The government will name a test track until September, on which the trucks will run. In Germany, only the literally “light” version of the trucks will be allowed – only up to 40 tons instead of 60.

Even though the trucks are not permitted to cross the border for the moment – alarm bells have already been ringing on the Austrian side, especially in Tyrol. Germany had been one of the fierce opponents of the XXL-trucks – but just until recently. Fritz Gurgiser, head of the Austria/Tyrol Transit Forum sees a “brutal attack” on rail transport and modal shift.

Regional Councilman Bernhard Tilg says „The use of gigaliners in Tyrol isout of question. I appeal to Transport Minister Bures to ensure that the use of these trucks remains prohibited.”

International transport companies favor this form of transport. The heavy trucks would ease traffic as they could carry more freight. Traffic experts, however, argue that roads would have to be adapted and have concerns about safety.

For the time being, representatives of the Tyrolean Chamber of Commerce say that the gigaliners were “not an option” and are convinced that these vehicles would not be profitable in Tyrol.
